Ye Olde Texas Beer Barn

We found out today that we are in a dry county, which odly enough doesn’t mean the complete absence of alchool, just that there are no stores you can buy it in though restaurants etc are still fair game. As we are on the road and have nice big empty fridges we went on a mission to find the nearest liquore store. When asked, the guy at the desk said “man, the closest one is way across town!” and he wasn’t wrong. We hit the interestate for about 10minutes, then took the exit to another interstate which we took until the second left. At this point we didn’t know which way to go, fortunately the cars in front of us did. They ALL turned and went down a little side street which led to The Stip. The Strip was just across the county line and was a series of seven or eight liquor stores all in row. There was neon and flashing arrows and gigantic three lane drive throughs, three was beer and wine and stores like Kwik Stop and Texas Beer Barn and Crossed Keys Liquor.

We actuallty did a drive by, we had to go around again and we were all laughing so hard that we couldn’t decide on a store. Finally we chose one and walked in, driving through just seemed wrong. I was actually impressed by their selection of beer and wine, but still no hard liquors, seems you can’t get those on a Sunday, though you can still get everything else. I’ll try and go back tomorrow and get some pictures it was just amazing! It really makes one wonder about the effectiveness of a Dry County when everyone can just drive a few minutes and still get everything they want.

Its raining rigt now, gigantic thunderboomers of a rain storm. I guess this means our chances of flying are pretty low. We are hopfully about tomorrow though, which would be nice. It wouild be great to finally finish this job and then head on to another state.

February 26 – Lubbock Texas

I got up early today, a lot of you won’t believe that I know, but I did. We went for breakfast and had a cold buffet with bad service and worse coffee. It seems Casper is hosting some sort of state wrestling championship and most of the hotels were full. At least all the wrestlers were gone (t the tourney I would expect) by the time we got out to breakfast.

The weather looked decent in Texas so we saddled up, so to speak, and headed to the airport. It was another crystal clear morning with a nice crisp feeling in the air. The flight down was uneventful I slept most of the way, and had some weird dreams. I think it was my subconcious hearing the air traffic controllers and weaving it into some sort of weird little mental montage. I must admit that it was colder here than I would have expected. Somehow I was thinking that it would be tropical down here, but I was mistaken. Its very spring like, to my Canadian senses; sort of cold but getting on to summer. It is actually unreal that I am here again, I never expected to be back in Texas so soon, its kind of Twighlight Zoneish actually.

Speaking of the Twighlight Zone, I have only seen one episode of it, I think… it even involved William Shatner. .. random aside there really.

Uhm. that’ll do I suppose. We made the most amazing discovery today but it isn’t something I can post here. If you want to know, and I haven’t already told you, email me and I’ll fill you in!

Casper Wyoming

Well, I am back at journeying again and despite all my grumblings while home it actually feels good! We landed in Casper WY tonight to clear customs and since the weather was bad in Lubbock Texas we decided to stay the night. Right now I am going to go grab some dinner and I’ll update again after that!
