Mt Elbert Winter Trip

Mt Elbert is the tallest peak in the state at 14,433 and what better way to spend a weekend in February than slogging through snow and braving the cold!

We got ourselves out of town on Saturday way ahead of the ski  traffic (5:45am!) and aimed for Leadville and the Golden Burro as our first destination. There we demolished a huge breakfast before carrying on to the South Elbert Trailhead.

It was a cool day, not cold (yet) and we were all in pretty good spirits as we got geared up and ready to go. Round trip it’s 11.2 miles and 4,800ft of elevation gain which makes for a decent trip. The plan was to hike up to treeline on Saturday, camp there and then summit on Sunday and return home.

Me grinning like an idiot, I can’t help it when I’m in the mountains!

Skiing and Climbing weekend!

I had a great weekend and am totally exhausted tonight, it’s grand.

Saturday was climbing out at Boulder Canyon again, we were on the Happy Hour crag which is a pretty decent place to be. The only downside is the short approach which means a ton of noise coming off the Highway. On the bright side though there were lots of great lines to be climbed. Twofer was one of my favs, it had a roof about halfway up that you had to maneuver around in just the right way. The first time was brutal! I was way too far from the roof and couldn’t reach (or see) the perfect holds just over the lip for the longest time but once I found them it was smoother sailing! My other favourite was Grins which had a lot of different moves on it, liebacks, stems and all sorts of fun stuff. I’ll definitely do that one again when I get the chance. We polished off the day with a few pints at The Dark Horse pub in Boulder which is one of those semi-seedy bars that I should make an effort to visit more often.

Sunday was skiing out at Breckenridge.  Alas no sleep-ins this weekend I was up and out of the city by 7.30am to try and beat the weekender traffic. Breck was in good form, no new snow which was a shame but what they had was really soft and decent. I hit a lot of black and double black stuff and quite a few of the groomers too. The weather was excellent, around -2c or so and the only downside was a slightly grey sky all day. Ah well, you can’t always get what you want eh?

In other news I found out that my renters are going to be moving out May 1 so if you know anyone who is looking for a place in Tuscany send em my way.
